Waikato War Horse Memorial Unveiled

Saturday 11 November 2017 was the official unveiling of Waikato Equestrians’ War Horse Statue at Hamilton’s memorial park, with an Armistice Day service and Waikato Mounted Rifles and War Horse parade.

The 300kg bronze statue of a horse looking for its fallen rider was created by former Defence Force artist Matt Gauldie to honour the Centenary of WW1 and the role of New Zealand’s 10,000 war horses who served alongside our nation’s military in foreign battlefields.

Rob Walsham, our Principal Engineer, provided the structural design input for the installation and attended the service.  Rob said “Hamilton put on a really good show, the service and the parade were very touching.  Matt has created a magnificent sculpture that perfectly encapsulates the poignancy of these beautiful animals and their role in war. I’ve just returned from Passchendaele where we were involved in the New Zealand Passchendaele Memorial Garden; the commemoration services have been extremely moving and we are very proud to be involved in creating such fitting legacies.”
