Tauranga City Council engaged Envivo to provide traffic modelling services for the Greerton intersection upgrade. Local Council officials were concerned about the traditional traffic signal operations and were keen to improve traffic operations – but without compromising on the positive aspects of the current layout.
Key considerations were also pedestrian and cyclist use, to ensure both user groups ended up with the functionality and safety needed.
Our traffic expert, Martin Huang, visited the site numerous times, initially to review a previous assessment and provide a technical report to demonstrate suggested design variations.
Our consultants examined the network effects by linking adjacent intersections to overview the broader impacts in this area. After working closely with Council engineers, we came up with an unusual site layout (aka, “dumbbell look”), which was used for public consultation. This received positive feedback from all stakeholders.
Two rain-drop roundabouts with staggered pedestrian crossings were adopted as the preferred design in this corridor as they provide the best overall benefits to all road users.
Our proposed design fit the bill perfectly with:
- improved traffic and transportation flow
- highlighted both safe pedestrian crossing behaviours
- enriched landscaping and environmental enhancements
Martin Huang said “this was a very interesting project, there were many stakeholders to consult with and the result has been positive and will look great.”
