We helped in the very first step of an Eco-Build home, named the iDEAL House. This empty site will soon be a hive of activity as the project gets underway. Murray and Lee Durbin’s goal is to build the first dual Zero Energy / PH Certified dwelling in New Zealand, and possibly highest HomeStar rated dwelling. Naturally, the first stage is surveying the site.
“The survey was very helpful,” said Murray “we’ve had to make some changes to the architect’s plans as a result and it’s good to know up-front what we need to do. To comply with Council height-to-boundary issues we’ve had to drop the overall height of the dwelling about 200mm, and also move it about a metre to the East. It’s also allowed us to calculate how much cut-fill may be required to get a level building platform, and trying to keep this under 200m3 which would require specific geo-tech engineering. In hindsight we should have had this done first before engaging with the architects, but thanks for getting it to us so quickly, that was great.”

Dr Paola Leardini, Lecturer at the University of Auckland, completed the concepts, and full drawings and project management is being completed by S3 Architects. The house to brings together new products and systems to showcase the latest energy efficient and PV technologies. Where possible the building also plans to use renewable or recyclable materials. Passive House is a certification of energy efficiency developed in Germany.
The key difference of the Ideal House is that it will be simpler, faster and more cost effective so that technologies can be adopted into main-stream,” said Murray. The project plans, progress and building costs will be available on http://idealhousenz.wordpress.com/envivo/
