JAWA Structures’ engineers have recently completed work on the Tri Star Gymnastic complex stage 2. Working with Pacific Environments Architects our structural engineers analysed Stage 1 and submitted engineering design for Stage 2 ensuring the building is built to last and conforms to seismic strengthening standards.
The gymnasium is located in Keith Hay Park, Mount Roskill and is home to numerous sports, with a swimming centre next door, a golf course to the west and is surrounded by soccer fields. This well-used building needed to be fit for purpose and able to cope with increased demand for recreational facilities. The redevelopment of the property for Stage 2 consisted of the addition of an upper level with tiered seating for spectators, community rooms and access to the main gymnasium.
Roman Savko, structural engineer, says ‘I enjoy working on unusual technical challenges. One of the issues with this building was that the engineering company that created the original gymnasium no longer existed and we needed to thoroughly review the structure and assess its integrity, while working with the architects for Stage 2.’
Rob Walsham, Principal Engineer, added “The outcome is a great credit to Roman’s perseverance in understanding how best to strengthen the original Stage 1 structure to accommodate the Stage 2 additions while meeting the tight budget and programme demanded by the client.”
